Choosing the right mortgage advisor for you is a process that can be fraught with confusion.

It’s not difficult to understand why.  Buying a home isn’t something most people do very often, and many are also unfamiliar with all the different steps involved.

So, my first tip would be to choose a mortgage advisor who can explain each step clearly, encouraging you to ask as many questions as you need.

Relaxed, friendly conversations

Ideally, you won’t be made to feel “stupid” for asking your questions.  Neither should you feel that the clock is ticking loudly throughout, as your chosen mortgage advisor frequently checks the time.

Buying a house is a big financial decision – perhaps the biggest one you will ever make – so it’s important that you understand exactly what’s involved, and what the implications might be.

So if you’d like to bring a friend or a family member along for support, or to take some notes throughout your meeting, then that should also be fine.

Putting you and your lifestyle first

Your mortgage conversation shouldn’t revolve solely around facts and figures.

While these are important, your current lifestyle and future plans – not to mention your personality, hopes and dreams! – should form an important part of your mortgage meeting.

This way, your chosen mortgage advisor will be able to offer advice and support that’s tailored directly to you and your needs.

Jargon-free advice

Every profession has its own form of jargon; that strange language that you only understand if you work in it yourself.

I wouldn’t necessarily understand the jargon you use in your job, and by the same token, I don’t expect you to understand mine!

Not only should they speak to you in plain English, but your chosen mortgage advisor should be prepared – and happy – to explain anything you don’t understand, whether it’s ‘jargon’ or not.

Holistic support

As I mentioned above, buying a house involves a number of different steps.  While your chosen mortgage advisor won’t be directly involved in all of them, they should still be able to offer support for each part of the process.

It’s all about looking out for a client’s best interests, which is one of the reasons why I decided to name my business ‘My Mortgage Angel’.

More than anything else, I want my clients to feel as though I’m wholly on their side, guiding them towards clear financial decisions that are right for them.

Taking care of your future

Protecting your finances is important, particularly when you become a home-owner.

Even if you’re not sure whether you need income protection or health cover, for example, your chosen mortgage advisor should explain the options available to you, in a relaxed conversation that’s free from any pressure or obligation.

An angel on your side

As an independent mortgage advisor, I have access to the whole of the market, so not only do I do my best to make my clients feel comfortable, but they don’t have to choose from a limited range of lending options.

I also chose not to charge a fee for my advice, but that doesn’t mean time spent with my clients is limited. I want each and every one to feel informed and in control of the decisions ahead.

If you’d like to find out more about My Mortgage Angel, and how we could possibly help you with mortgage and protection advice, please get in touch.
